Acting and Being
An Acting and Meditation Retreat
with Parlan McGaw, Jean-Claude van Itallie, and Rae C. Wright
July 11-14, 2013
$495
Shantigar Foundation
Rowe, MA

Parlan reunites with renowned playwright and acting teacher Jean-Claude van Itallie and Rae C Wright, actor, writer, and teacher, for Acting and Being, a four-day, three-night opportunity to play, open up, let go, and connect with your creative core. Taking place in the secluded beauty of the natural world, this intensive will include meditation instruction and practice, awareness exercises, theatre games, contemplation exercises, and improvisation — all designed to help us open the heart and deepen emotional authenticity, develop stronger presence and confidence, and engage with others in free expression.

In the belief that acting training is also training in being a human being, we’ll examine how meditation helps us connect with our creativity and cultivate the mental focus, physical freedom, emotional range, and spontaneity that make for vibrant acting and vibrant living.

Enjoy yourself in the beautiful setting of Shantigar, in mountains of northwestern Massachusetts, with fresh air, deliciously fresh locally sourced food, and good company.

Open to all, from professional performer and avid meditator to those just beginning to explore new horizons.

Lucid Body/Lucid Heart
An Actors’ Exploration of Self and Character
with Parlan McGaw and Fay Simpson
September 6-9, 2012
$395
Karme Choling Meditation Center
Barnet, VT

Parlan is thrilled to be teaming up with Fay Simpson for this three-day intensive exploring the source from which all characters emerge. Fay Simpson’s Lucid Body process of chakra exploration and audible exhale along with McGaw’s Heart of Acting techniques will help you tap into the energy and wisdom of your body, mind, and heart to access the tools you need to create work that is vibrant, compelling, playful, and powerful.

Each day will begin with meditation practice, providing a soft, open ground for our rigorous acting work. Parlan McGaw will guide you in potent and practical techniques that develop presence, open the heart, connect you with character, and transform stage fright into confidence. Fay Simpson will lead you through active improvisations guided by your archetypes, shadows, and dreams, encouraging all parts of self to come out and play. You will experience an expansion of your physical and emotional being, promoting better living, better acting.

This program is for actors who want to break through to a new level of emotive availability and personal truth. With a deeper connection to your inherent artistic riches, you’ll come away from the retreat with a greater ability to get out of your head, take risks, and surprise yourself.

Karme Choling is set on 450 acres (including its own organic vegetable garden) in the beautiful Green Mountains of northeast Vermont, with hiking trails on the land and lakes and swimming holes nearby. The program begins with orientation at 7:30pm, September 6 and ends with lunch, September 9. No previous meditation experience is required.

The Acting and Being program was a real pleasure. I had the opportunity to work with Rae C. Meditation for Actors
Weekend Intensive
April 24 and 25, 2010
Saturday & Sunday
11 AM – 5 PM
$200
Michael Howard Studios
152 West 25th Street, 10th floor
New York, NY

We just completed another wonderful weekend intensive. It was great to be back at the Michael Howard Studios. We had a terrific—and international—group of participants, including a veteran Broadway star, an actor from South Africa, two Portuguese film stars, and a faculty member from HB Studios. They were receptive, intelligent in their questions and observations, hardworking, and generous as actors. It was a real pleasure to spend the weekend together.
